From previous communication with the artist in 2021: That print is from 1973. It is printed with industrial enamel. I used a water block out for each color on the same screen. I worked in reverse, so that at the end of printing, there was very little left of a stencil.

Then I would go to the car wash and wash the water block out from the screen and begin a new one. I would start out with an edition of 10 pieces of paper and sometimes, as I got good enough, I actually made 10 prints of the image. The image was always improvised and I never knew what would happen throughout. Much like my life.
I learned to silk screen print at a book store out on Taraval in San Francisco and went home to try it out. Within a year I was making prints like yours and later I began making them more figurative, less ornamental. Also much bigger and much more politically incorrect. They grew in size to 40 x 60, and most of those I still have in a box at my studio.
I have never been one to dwell on what I do, so after several hundred prints like yours, I had moved on to steel and other stuff. My work has always been informed by my day jobs, as in the case of the enamel prints when I worked as a house painter and used a lot of synthetic enamel. The steel came from building and repairing ships professionally, thus its rough industrial quality for which I became famous.
