Photos Wanted – Fairy Rock (Re-Post) Growing up in White River in the ’50s and ’60s meant spending your days outdoors, not staring at a screen. My house was on Highland Ave., up on the hill where the middle and high school would eventually be built. Back then it was mostly farmland – open, quiet, explorable. One of our favorite discoveries was an outcropping of granite with a long, narrow vein of white quartz running over the top and down the face.

Where the vein dropped toward the woods below, it had broken off in jagged sections forming what we decided were steps – small, irregular, just right for imagination. We called them Fairy Steps. The whole formation became Fairy Rock, somewhere between a secret and local knowledge, shared only with select others. Eventually a path wore through the woods and was easy to follow. This was before I-91 existed. When the highway came, it became an obstacle – crossing it required a sprint – and over time the path surrendered to nature and disappeared. A few last visits were made. Then fond memory took over. My brother and I, now considerably less sprint-capable, are looking for photographs of Fairy Rock and the Fairy Steps. If you have any – or even just a clear memory of the place – we’d love to hear from you. If you don’t have photos but own a decent drone with a camera, we’d like to talk. Perhaps we could arrange a trade of some kind. If enough memories and images surface, maybe the Valley News would find it worth printing. Please reach out. Thank you. – Gaylord Livingston Sent from my iPad
